Today I Watched: Planetes #1, Shigofumi #1

Planetes – Episode 1

[Kametsu] Planetes - 01 (BD 720p Hi10 AACx2) [EB894A73].mkv_snapshot_24.59_[2016.08.09_05.09.36]

Score: 8+ out of 10.

Notes: I loved the animation, the character design, and the direction. As Bobduh said, “you get a clear view of a very confident director in total control of his gifts”. The script, esp. the characters & how they interact & illuminate each other, seems to follow Screenwriting 101 to a T — which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It just feels somewhat more standard or Western or Hollywood-ish than I expected. Read John Truby’s The Anatomy of Story: 22 Steps to Becoming a Master Storyteller, esp. on what he calls the Character Web, to see what I mean. Anyway, great first episode.

Shigofumi: Letters from the Departed – Episode 1

Score: 7− out of 10.
